Course details
This entry-level certification program, offered by Melbourne Wine School, one of the most experienced providers of WSET certifications in Melbourne, covers wines of the world.
The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits is a hands-on introduction to the world of spirits — whisky, gin, rum, vodka, brandy and more. In a single session at our Richmond location, you'll explore the main categories through sight, smell and taste, and develop a practical understanding of how production shapes what ends up in your glass. Ideal for anyone starting a career in hospitality, working behind a bar, or simply wanting to understand spirits beyond the label. No prior knowledge required.
Registration fee includes:
- 8 hours of live class, course registration & exam fees
- Spirit samples tasted throughout the program
- WSET Level 1 Spirits workbook
1 - How spirits are made — fermentation, distillation and maturation
2 - The major spirit categories: whisky, gin, rum, vodka, brandy and more
3 - How to identify aromas and flavours through structured tasting
4 - How production decisions affect flavour and style
5 - Alcoholic fermentation
6 - Responsible service and storage of spirits
7 - Cocktail categories and basic mixing principles
The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits assessment is a closed-book examination consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions taken by students at the end of the course.
Candidates will have 45 minutes to complete the exam.
Candidates must answer 70% (22 out of 30) of the questions correctly to pass.
All attendees must be at least 18 years of age.
There are no other requirements for this course.
