Ramey Wine Cellars is one of the defining forces in modern California winemaking, helping to establish a more refined, age-worthy style that has shaped the region’s reputation in the 21st century.

Ramey Wine Cellars is one of the defining forces in modern California winemaking, helping to establish a more refined, age worthy style that has shaped the region’s reputation in the 21st century. Founded in 1996 by David Ramey and his wife Carla, the winery combines classical Old World techniques, drawn from Ramey’s experience in Bordeaux, with exceptional fruit from Sonoma and Napa. Ramey’s approach was grounded in both intellectual rigour and practical experience, and his work helped shift California away from purely fruit driven styles toward wines of greater structure, balance, and longevity.

Over decades of winemaking, Ramey introduced and championed practices that are now widely adopted, particularly in Chardonnay production, including whole cluster pressing, native yeast fermentation, sur lie ageing in barrel, and minimal intervention at bottling. These techniques, alongside a strong focus on vineyard sourcing, allowed the winery to produce both single vineyard wines and blends that clearly express site character.

From humble beginnings, the estate has grown into one of California’s iconic producers, known for wines that balance richness with precision and power with restraint. Close collaboration with multigenerational growers has remained central to its success, reinforcing a commitment to terroir driven wines. Today, with the second generation, Claire and Alan Ramey, leading the winery, the vision remains unchanged, to craft classic wines from Sonoma and Napa that stand confidently alongside the world’s finest.
