Tyrrell's was founded in 1858 by Edward Tyrrell at Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. It's Australia's oldest continuously family-owned and operated winery, now run by the fifth generation, and the ironbark slab hut Edward built still stands at the winery.

Tyrrell's is best known for Hunter Semillon. Vat 1, from the Short Flat vineyard, has been made continuously since 1963 and is Australia's most-awarded white wine. HVD comes from a site with some of the oldest Semillon vines in the Hunter. The family also made Australia's first commercial Chardonnay, Vat 47, in 1971.

There's also old-vine Shiraz from the Hunter Valley estate, and Shiraz from Heathcote, Victoria, under the Rufus Stone label.
