Why five evenings
In 1855, for the Paris Universal Exhibition, Bordeaux's wine brokers ranked the region's best red wines into five growths, judged on each estate's reputation and the prices its wines fetched. Today 61 châteaux hold a place: 60 in the Médoc and one, Haut-Brion, in the Graves.
Only one château has ever moved up a rank: Mouton Rothschild, promoted to First Growth in 1973. So we're tasting it the way it was drawn up, one growth a night, starting with the Fifth Growths and finishing with the five First Growths.
You can come to just one, but they're built to be done together.
